Finding Ways to Overcome Obstacles to Bike Commuting, 7 p.m.,
Royal Oak Public Library (222 East 11 Mile Road)
If
you ride your bike to work or for doing errands such as grocery
shopping or would like to be able to do so more easily, East
Michigan Environmental Action Council invites you to participate
in a series of discussion groups on the topic of bike commuting.
Share with other bicyclists and residents the challenges
you have encountered in trying to bike commute and we’ll explore
some of the ways we can work together to overcome some of the
obstacles. This bike commuting project is being funded through
a grant provided by the State of Michigan’s Energy Office.
The discussion groups are free of charge and open to
members of the public. For more information, contact Heather Northway
at EMEAC, 248-258-5188.

Lessons
from the Zero Energy Home with Christina Snyder, 1-5 p.m., Upland
Hills Ecological Center
Back
by popular demand! Christina Snyder, architect and adjunct professor,
will share lessons learned from the State of Michigan Zero Energy
(fossil fuel free) House Competition. The contest defines a
Zero Energy Home as "a house that does not use fossil fuels
(which are a non-renewable energy source) on a net annual basis."
Energy to be used in the house is provided by renewable energy
strategies including passive solar designs, photovoltaic system,
active solar heating systems, and/or bioenergy systems. This
presentation will also include a preview of Christina's upcoming
presentation that includes ideas householders can easily apply
to their existing homes. The event will also feature an Energy
Tour of the Ecological Awareness Center. This event is sponsored
by EMEAC, The Small Business Association of Michigan, and Oakland
University School of Education and Human Services.
